If you've looked at a heart health or mood support supplement label lately, there's a good chance you've spotted "aged garlic extract" on the ingredient list—often standing right next to things like CoQ10, B vitamins, or medicinal mushrooms. That's not a coincidence. Aged garlic extract is increasingly being paired with other herbs and nutrients to created unique supplements carefully designed to target specific health goals.
The Power of AGE
Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ is made by aging raw organic garlic for up to 20 months—a proprietary process that mellows garlic’s harsh sulfur compounds into gentler water-soluble ones while enhancing the herb’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood-vessel-supporting properties. Unlike raw garlic, AGE is easy on the stomach, odor-free, and has been tested in hundreds of human clinical trials. According to these studies, AGE effectively reduces blood pressure, coronary artery calcification, and the buildup of soft plaque in arteries.1,2,3 It’s also been show to improve immunity, brain health, digestion, and more.4,5,6
In addition to the benefits it provides on its own, AGE can increasingly be found in supplements alongside other well-studied ingredients. This is largely due to AGE’s ability to complement the action of other ingredients or to act as a “bio-accelerator,” increasing the ingredients bioavailability and efficacy. Let’s take a closer look at several peer-reviewed studies behind some of these popular pairings.
AGE + B-vitamins + L-arginine: The Artery Protecting Trio
Researchers at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA tested a formulation containing Kyolic AGE plus vitamins B6 and B12, folic acid, and L-arginine. The participants, who were all at intermediate cardiovascular risk, were given either the AGE-plus supplement or a placebo daily for one year. The trial found that the combination formula reduced inflammation and oxidation while improving vascular function and the progression of coronary artery plaque. A follow-up analysis found that the AGE-plus supplement also improved the distribution of white and brown fat, as well as reducing homocysteine and the progression of coronary artery calcium.4
What’s the mechanism behind pairing AGE with B-vitamins and L-arginine? There’s a clear evidence that elevated homocysteine (which B12, B6, and folate are known to help metabolize) independently damages the endothelium.5 AGE reduces oxidative stress and stimulates nitric oxide in endothelial cells—directly counteracting the damage caused by high homocystine.6
L-arginine works through a related pathway by providing the raw material the body uses to make nitric oxide.7 Together, L-arginine and AGE work to increase nitric oxide, effectively dilating blood vessels and improving blood flow.
AGE and Medicinal Mushrooms: Complementary Immune Support
Medicinal mushrooms are increasingly found in supplements targeting everything from cognition to sleep. One of the most popular uses revolves around key mushrooms like chaga, cordyceps, and turkey tail for immune health.8,9,10 Yet, these mushrooms are only as effective as their ability to reach the cells and tissues in the body. That’s where AGE comes in. Studies show that AGE reduces inflammation and oxidative stress—two common factors that can impede the delivery of the beneficial compounds in medicinal mushrooms.11,12 In addition, research shows that AGE actively supports healthy microcirculation, dilating the tiny arterioles, capillaries, and venules that deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues.13 These well-researched actions confirm that AGE acts as a “bio-accelerator,” ensuring that the immune-supporting polysaccharides in mushrooms reach the tissues involved in the body’s immune response.14
On its own, AGE has the ability to improve immunity. This complementary benefit was shown in a large randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 120 healthy adults. According to the study, supplementing with AGE for 90 days improved the function of natural killer (NK) cells and γδ-T cells—two types of immune cells that fight viral infections—and was linked to less severe cold and flu symptoms. 15
AGE + CoQ10: A Well-Documented Combo for Healthier Blood Vessels
One of the clearest studies for the efficacy of one of these pairings comes from the FAITH trial, a year-long, placebo-controlled study of Los Angeles County firefighters—a group with high occupational stress and cardiovascular risk. The participants took 1,200 mg of Kyolic AGE plus 120 mg of Coenzyme Q10 daily for a year. Compared to those taking a placebo, the AGE plus CoQ10 group showed significantly better arterial flexibility and improved endothelial function—two measures of how well the cells that line your blood vessels are working.1
A related analysis from the same trial found that the AGE-plus-CoQ10 group also had a considerably slower buildup of coronary artery calcium and lower levels of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) over the year, compared with the placebo.2 In a sub-analysis presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions, the firefighters who took the supplement also showed a significantly larger drop in perceived mental stress compared to the placebo group.3
What makes AGE plus CoQ10 such a winning combo? AGE appears to support blood vessel relaxation and reduce oxidative stress, while CoQ10 fuels the mitochondria inside heart and blood vessel cells. Together, this nutrient combination targets two different, complementary mechanisms behind vascular aging.
The Bottom Line
These examples show how Kolic AGE works with other ingredients to support whole-body health. Although it doesn’t universally boost the efficacy of every ingredient it’s paired with, AGE can enhance the bioavailability of other ingredients, helping the body get the most benefit from them.
Not all ‘aged garlic extract’ advertised in supplements is the same. This article focuses exclusively on research conducted using Wakunaga of America’s Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract. Wakunaga sources their garlic from organic farms in California and uses a proprietary process to create aged garlic. It then manufactures the aged garlic supplements in the USA in their own GMP certified facility with over 200 quality control checks from farm to bottle. Purity, potency and quality matter for herbal ingredients, and the health benefits of aged garlic extract can only be assured by using a well-researched product that meets the high standards of Kyolic.
